Starting a new job always brings its fair share of surprises and learning curves. Still, nothing could have prepared me for the otherworldly experience of being introduced to Ontrack Data Recovery. Coming from a completely different background, I was excited to learn about this process, which can only be described as modern-day magic.
With images circling my mind of sleek computer screens and technology plucked straight from a science fiction movie, I walked into the office with the usual mix of nerves, eagerness and excitement. Even though it felt like I was walking into Tony Starks laboratory, I quickly discovered that data recovery, especially mobile data recovery, is also an intensely physical and meticulous process.
The Process of Mobile Data Recovery
I spent my first few days shadowing the data recovery engineers, watching them perform these miracles on a day-to-day basis with tools and techniques I could never have imagined. One of the most eye-opening aspects of my first week was realising just how much expertise goes into data recovery. Each case is unique, with its own set of challenges and intricacies. I watched them read diagnostics, which seemed to be in a different language and perform the work needed. It felt like I was watching a surgeon, with every movement calculated and deliberate. I distinctly remember watching them work on the phone of a customer I had previously talked to. It was an iPhone pretending to be a Nokia flip phone, bent in the wrong places and cracks on every surface.
Success!
Long story short, they managed to retrieve 100% of the data, and I couldn’t understand how they had managed to retrieve all of this data from what seemed to be a slab of scrap metal. Getting past my shock, I was so excited to call the customer to tell them the good news, as I knew from my initial conversation with them that this data meant the world to them.
Before starting my role within the company and having never experienced data loss, it was difficult to understand the severity of the situation. Whether it’s lost photos of a loved one, a vital server malfunction of a small business, or even a ransomware attack on a global company, we all need, use, or love the data that our devices hold, and the implications of losing said data can be catastrophic.
I love being a part of the essential and magical data recovery work Ontrack provides.
